The Story of the Boat

Unbeknown to them, it turned out that a boat was slowly rotting on a trailer in Bournemouth! A chance conversation with Bournemouth Council’s Seafront Supervisor Steen Stones prompted a meeting with Bournemouth Seafront Sports & Recreation Manager Matt Lloyd. Suddenly Bournemouth Surfboat Club found itself the proud recipient of an ex-Australian surfboat! Built some 22 years ago in Bulii, South West Australia, she had been sitting gathering moss after a four-year lay up and was looking very sorry for herself.

The newly acquired surfboat was stored for the winter while friends and enthusiasts cleaned her up and assessed her condition. Closer investigation revealed rotting wood seats and several holes in the hull. This was beyond the DIY skills of the fledgling BSC team, but as luck would have it, two guardian angels stepped in to offer their expertise; cabinet maker John Clarke and Sunseeker carpenter Matt Williams.

Energised by John & Matt’s specialist skills and the kind donation of many, many hours of woodworking renovation, the surfboat was then moved under cover, thanks to our friends at sister club Westover & Bournemouth Rowing Club.

To date, all rotten wood has now been removed and hull supports have been secured with several layers of resin and fibreglass matting. Damage to the hull has been professionally repaired and the gel coat has been rubbed down with wet & dry ready for a shiny new paint job in our new club colours, blue and gold. John and Matt are currently installing the brand new Iroko hardwood seats.

Our Surf Boat Refurbishment Project – The Story So Far...
On Saturday 27th August 2011 our gorgeous surf boat saw daylight for the first time in eighteen months! All the new Iroko seats and supporting knees are now bonded in place (special thanks to our guardian angel carpenters John Clarke and Matt Williams) with just the footplate supports under construction to complete structural repairs. The hull has been
repaired, filled and rubbed down and is currently being sprayed in club colours by our friend from Poole Rowing Club, Wayne Callaghan.

We will be celebrating work complete to date by having a boat ‘topping out’ launch ceremony at the last surfboat race of the summer on Saturday 24th September just along from Boscombe pier. Racing starts at Midday!
